In the town of Burgos, Spain sits one of the most intricate and beautiful cathedrals on the camino thus far. The Cathedral of Saint Mary of Burgos began construction in 1221 and continued major projects throughout the 18th century. It has become a central point of high population in Burgos due to the cathedrals touristic appeal. Restaurants and gift shops surround the outer edges of the great structure. The cathedral is the result of several architects continuing work on various aspects of the building and museum tour. Many additions include murals depicting religious events, tombs of holy priests important to the cathedral, paintings and even small tokens of religious items used for generations of catholic masses. While all of the works and exhibits can be described in the greatest detail, the breathtaking and frankly at times overwhelming nature of this cathedral cannot be fully understood until it is seen with your own eyes. I took my first step inside and was instantly taken away by the intricacy that is this testament to God. Every inch of this building was constructed with care and craftsmanship that went far beyond most cathedrals. Floral patterns and intricate geometric shapes covered the building and its' many components. For me, it was a surreal experience. Seeing all of this work put into one building helped to show me just how much people cared about their religion. Generations of architects, painters, carpenters and priests worked to make this cathedral what it is today, and that thought is hard to comprehend at times. To think, for hundreds of years people worked to make this very structure that now sits in Spain. It was an incredible experience and will remain one of the many places that I won't forget any time soon.
